Texas Hush Puppies are a Southern favorite—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with savory cornmeal flavor. Made with simple pantry ingredients and a splash of buttermilk for tang, these bite-sized fritters are perfect served hot from the fryer. A touch of sugar and seasoned salt adds depth, while chopped onion (optional) gives them a flavorful kick. Whether you’re pairing them with catfish, BBQ, or fried chicken, these hush puppies are a tried-and-true classic you’ll keep coming back to.
2 cups cornmeal
1/2 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg, beaten
6 Tbsp chopped onion (optional)
2 cups buttermilk
1 tsp seasoned salt
In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking soda, baking powder, sugar, salt, and seasoned salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and beaten egg.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until smooth.
If using, fold in the chopped onion.
In a deep skillet or fryer, heat oil to medium (about 350°F). Make sure it’s hot enough to sizzle but not so hot that the outside cooks too fast.
Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil.
Fry until golden brown on one side, then flip and fry the other side. Total fry time is about 2–3 minutes per batch.
Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
Serve hot and enjoy!
