Old-Fashioned Applesauce Cake is a deeply spiced, moist cake filled with warm cinnamon, tender raisins, crunchy nuts, and sweet fig preserves. Cooked unsweetened apples form the base of this dense, fruit-packed treat, while a slow bake time ensures a rich, evenly textured crumb. This cake tastes even better the next day, making it perfect for make-ahead desserts, holiday trays, or cozy fall afternoons. It’s old-school baking at its best—simple, generous, and unforgettable.
3 cups cooked apples (unsweetened)
1 cup butter
2 ½ cups sugar
2 cups nuts
1 box seedless raisins, cut in half
4 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp salt
4 cups flour
2 ½ tsp baking soda
1 cup fig preserves
Preheat oven to 300°F. Grease and flour a Bundt pan.
In a large bowl, combine the cooked apples, butter, and sugar. Stir until well blended.
Mix the baking soda into the apple mixture.
Sprinkle some of the flour over the chopped nuts, halved raisins, and fig preserves to coat them lightly.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining flour, cinnamon, and salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the apple mixture and mix until mostly combined.
Fold in the floured nuts, raisins, and fig preserves until evenly distributed.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for about 2 hours, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan before inverting onto a serving plate.
