Made with just a few simple ingredients, these butter cookies are rich, tender, and subtly sweet. The dough comes together effortlessly and is shaped by hand with a simple fork press for a classic, home-baked look. Add chopped pecans for a nutty crunch or leave them out for a pure buttery bite. These cookies are ideal for gifting or pairing with coffee or tea.
Ingredients
-
1 lb butter, softened
-
2 cups powdered sugar
-
3 tsp vanilla
-
4 cups plain flour
-
1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 300°F.
In a large bowl, beat softened butter until smooth and creamy.
Add powdered sugar and vanilla; mix until well combined.
Gradually add flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
If using pecans, fold them in at this stage.
Roll dough into small balls and place on an ungreased baking sheet.
Lightly mash the tops with a fork to flatten slightly.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are just barely golden.
Cool on the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Recipe Note
- Do not overbake—cookies should remain pale with just a hint of golden brown underneath.
- Optional: Dust with extra powdered sugar once cooled for a festive touch.
- These cookies freeze well and stay fresh in an airtight container for up to a week.
