This chocolate icing is a family favorite for good reason—simple ingredients, quick prep, and big chocolate flavor. Made on the stovetop with margarine, sugar, cocoa, and milk, it’s boiled briefly for a smooth, fudge-like texture, then whipped until thick enough to spread. The result is a glossy, rich icing that sets beautifully on cakes without becoming overly stiff. Perfect for chocolate lovers who appreciate a classic, no-fuss frosting that tastes homemade in every bite.
Ingredients
-
½ cup margarine
-
2 cups sugar
-
3 Tbsp cocoa
-
½ cup milk
Directions
In a medium saucepan, combine margarine, sugar, cocoa, and milk.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
Once boiling, continue to boil for 1 minute, still stirring to prevent scorching.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Beat the mixture with an electric mixer until it thickens to a spreadable consistency.
Immediately spread over cooled cake before it sets.
Recipe Note
- This recipe makes enough for one 9x13 inch cake or one 2-layer cake.
- If icing thickens too quickly, reheat gently or add a splash of warm milk to loosen.
- Best used the same day for smoothest application, though it holds well once set.
