½ cup butter or margarine

1 ¼ Tbsp vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

½ tsp baking powder

¼ tsp salt

½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
In a large bowl, cream together sugar and butter until smooth.
Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
In a separate bowl, sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until well blended.
Fold in chopped nuts, if using.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool before cutting into squares.
