Ingredients

¾ cup shortening

1 cup sugar

¼ cup molasses

1 egg

2 tsp baking soda

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp salt
Directions
Melt the shortening in a saucepan over low heat. Allow to cool slightly.
In a mixing bowl, combine the melted shortening, sugar, molasses, and egg. Beat well until smooth.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt.
Gradually stir the dry mixture into the wet mixture until a dough forms
Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to make it easier to handle.
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Roll chilled dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in granulated sugar.
Place on a baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until tops are crackled and cookies are set.
Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
